It’s Over

Thesis is done!

Thesis

I also managed to finish an essay for my final arts course. I am finished. My arts/law degree is over, and in December, I graduate.

Essay submission

Goodbye arts degree

It took 6 years, but it’s done.

The last few days have been mental, in a fun way, so here are a few snaps.

I spent the last few days at uni with friends until 1 or 2am, eating take-away and writing like a mad woman.

Mad-woman face. 2am. Too much caffeine.

Then it was over.

I went back to visit after getting the thesis bound, and my wonderful friends (who haven’t even started their exams yet!) had champagne.

Andrew with Champagne

Andrew with the Champagne from Emily

Best moment ever.

Picnic

Emily pouring the champers. Lil brought chocolate and fruit.

Andrew managed to break a glass.

Broken glass

Whoops

And apparently I copped some of it.

You will forever know if I’m lying about a foot picture now!

No drama.

The plan was to celebrate with a run. It didn’t happen.

When I got home, the house was empty. I won’t go into too much detail here. Some of this is not my story to tell. But in short, my house-mates picked this weekend to move out, and getting home just as they left finished me off. All of a sudden, I was finished, home, and in an empty house. The once crowded lounge room was a floor with an armchair, fish-tank and vacuum cleaner. The cupboard was bare, with the exception of my shelf. The bedrooms were empty.

I lost it. In every possible way.

I got so much love from all of you last night – and I really appreciate it! Today is much better, the thesis is in,and I am ready to get back into life. With more blogging to boot.

Your Turn!

Have you ever written a thesis?
What do you do to celebrate finishing something?
Ever had a messy house break-up?

Oh it was shit. Just shit. But now I’m tucked up in bed in Sydney and on to the next phase. School is horrendous, and you are the smart cookie who knew not to go back ;-)

That looks so scary. I’m a writer for a living (technical writer for a software company), and it still scares me. I’d freak if I had to write something academic now. I’d rather write procedures! But, congratulations on getting it done and getting one step closer to graduation, definitely treat yourself to a nice drink after that and get some rest from those late nights!

Thanks Amy! Graduation is going to be the sweetest feeling. I don’t think I knew that you wrote for a living – I knew you worked from home. Very cool, and it sounds like you enjoy it!

  7. Many congrats on your thesis! That has to be a huge weight off your shoulders! The champagne sounds lovely–minus the broken glass injury! Hope you’re healing up ok!

  8. Amy says:

    Congratulations Kate!!!!
Sorry to hear about your foot, hopefully the champagne sterilised it from the inside out :)
I remember when I finished my first uni degree, I was a mess at the end. You have dedicated yourself to achieving this goal for so long, and been at “school” in some form or another for nearly your whole life. It only stands to reason that there are some heavy emotions going on. Give yourself time to celebrate, time to grieve the loss of it a little, and most of all – be extremely proud of yourself!
I’ll be writing my master’s thesis at the end of next year, so hopefully I won’t go completely crazy…

You are wonderful. Thanks so much! I have hated most of law school (which is why I took a year off – 6 years instead of 5) and it hasn’t quite sunk in that that’s the end of study. Forever, if I so choose!

Aww, well congrats on finishing this huge accomplishment! I can’t imagine the let down from all the stress, so it’s no wonder you’re emotional. I hope you get some TLC soon :D

  10. Soooo glad to hear there was champagne before the craziness ensued! Seriously an awesome achievement … hope now that you are OUT of Canberra you can enjoy it!

Give those poor feet some love… we runners need them…. preferably not all cut up. Of all the people in the world who totally deserve to splurge on a pedicure it would definitely be YOU the marathon, thesis writing super woman :=)

I know I am a couple days late, but HUGE congrats on getting your thesis done!!! I know all to well the feelings that come associated with that. You are on a high one minute and a low the next. In many ways, I think it can be very similar to running a marathon. You spend so much time and energy preparing and then it’s just over and done with…Just be glad it’s done and you can put it all behind you. Best of luck moving forward and starting your next chapter in life!

Thanks SO much Crystal, and you’re absolutely right. It’s a crazy emotional messy experience. I’ve kind of stayed away from it for a few days knowing that, but it was just brutal, so I might have to give it a bit longer! Why must everything be so crazy?!

  12. Catching up a bit… belated congrats on your thesis. What a fantastic accomplishment! So sorry for the emotional end to your day… hope you’re feeling better today!
