Tight Squeeze

Thanks so much for the amazing tips and support yesterday!

The overwhelming majority seems to be in favour of running with the slower group, and camelbak if I feel I must have it – which is really a ‘no’!

My clothes shrank

This is an uncomfortable topic, but one I feel quite a few of you can relate to.

Today I tried on some pants that I haven’t worn in a few months (more than one pair!) and they don’t fit. In the past, this would have sent me into a spiral of crazy. Today, it was a mild annoyance.

I still hate it when this happens, but I think for the first time in years, I honestly don’t mind all that much.

In training, I’ve put on some weight and developed different muscles. I’ve also eaten more.

All of these things – running, training, eating – have made me a better, happier person.

There is a reason I’m always in a skirt…

Weight changes – day by day, week by week. As long as I’m not sitting around eating litres of ice cream while watching the Simpsons (which is the best thing ever when combined with other past-times!), then I’ve got nothing to worry about.

And that’s liberating.

I have the same issue with gaining weight now. You are right, training and running a lot definitely changes your muscles. I don’t know how much I’ve gained, since I don’t weight, but I can tell my legs are bigger and more muscular. I do wish I could be as confident and cool about it as you are, though. That’s definitely admirable… either way, you will run a marathon and that’s an awesome thing and I’m sure no one else has noticed the gain :) .

  2. Girl I always gain weight while training! And I am usually training for something 85% of the year! Not fun! But I’ve read it’s normal to gain weight while training for a marathon. Love your attitude about it!!! You look great girl!

Ohh you! Thanks for posting this so much!!!! It really helps me to see your attitude about the too small clothes! I’m underweight and need to gain for my health! I didnt want my clothes not to fit but it needs to be done. Hearing you motivates and inspires me so much more to not fear that!! Love you and thank you!!

Jenna, I’m glad I could help in some small way! It’s not an easy place to be, and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve just stood in front of the mirror .. usually Mr The Rake turns off the light or turns me around so I stop looking. I feel more confident and more happy than I ever did in my little jeans. I have to trust that time makes it much more comfortable and enjoyable! xxx Lots of luck, and feel free to tell me how you’re going with it. Any time!

I am a totally up and down person. If I am running I don’t worry about it. I just say to myself, “it is what it is”. Food as too much power in my opinion and I a so over it. I eat what I want and run. :)

No fun planned for Monday, but I am sure I will think of something. :0

  5. Way to have such a great attitude! Health is definitely way more important than fitting into a jean size!

  6. YAY! Go Kate! Yes, we are not defined by the size of our pants AND it is a REAL annoyance when it happens. Because shopping is so much work when you NEED to go get new stuff. That’s why I have so many sizes in my wardrobe ;-)

I love this post! Sometimes I still need to remind myself that a little gain isn’t the end of the world, and that feeling healthy and fit is the true achievement! :)

Abby, I’m so glad you liked it. It really isn’t the end of the world, and I find it settles into the weight it needs for the phase that I’m in (even if I want to obsess a bit!)

  8. Since I’ve been training for my first marathon I’ve put on weight to. I’m not bothered by it though, I just tell myself I’m bulking up like the Hulk. ;)

I think you look amazing! Strong, lean, fit and healthy with legs to die for! Chuck away those pants and show off those fabulous legs!

  10. I gained 7 pounds training for my first marathon because I was hungry all the time. However, I would never give the marathon experience back for those 7 pounds.
You will find it is so worth it and the weight will come off later.
Enjoy your running domination now and don’t worry about it.

I actually remembered that yesterday – you saying you had put on weight while training. And it really helped! I figured the same – this is what it needs to be right now, and it’s totally fine.

  11. don’t focus on the stupid clothes or a number on the scale focus on the TIMES!!! running times and performance is wat counts, ur body is a machine and capable of things much more important than fitting into some pair of pants. pluuuus, everyone knows big, strong, awesome runner quads are meant to hulk out any pant leg. ;) XOXO

Oh goodness, I know all too much about the weight gain part! I started gaining weight when I started training this season (my first time training for major distance). It recently came off and I hold steady at about a couple lbs lighter than when I started but omg the difference in body composition?? light years!

You know what I did? I took weekly progress pictures. I never thought I’d share them but I did (end of May vs mid August) http://www.dailymile.com/people/Briecheese/entries/17509127

They really helped me SEE the progress. I could feel it but it helps to actually be able to put a side by side picture together and realize that that number on the scale doesn’t matter much.

It’s amazing how changing ones lifestyle really makes a huge difference! I just followed your blog from a comment so I haven’t seen all the changes but you look great! I wouldn’t worry at all about any weight gain because running and working out is healthy and even though the scale says you weigh more or your pants are tighter in the thighs (some of mine are!) it means MUSCLE! :D

SO, first of all, sorry for the late reply! I’m usually a little quicker off the mark. Your comment made me smile THIS BIG. Thanks or sharing your story. I saw your photos and you look AMAZING. I’m all about trying to focus on fit and not skinny, but I still have my moment :-) . I love how much we women seem to be willing to band together and share our stories and march on together in our fitness journeys.

I’m now heading over to your page! So lovely to meet you.

      • Brie says:

No worries at all about the comment time! I am usually a bit slower to reply/comment since I tend to spend only a couple days a week catching up. It’s nice to meet you and follow another fellow runner’s blog! :) For myself I know blogspot doesn’t notify friends of replies so I don’t usually reply, but I appreciate any encouragement and comments! Thank you for visiting my page and for the really sweet compliment on my progress. It’s been exciting to see some changes.

My main motivation was always to learn to really stick with exercising regularly and was fitness related as well. Of course I thought about how I’d maybe lose weight, but I’m glad I thought to take pictures instead of looking at the scale and becoming discouraged. It’s depressing to think that a number can dictate how we’re feeling about ourselves for that day or even that week! (I know I’ve been guilty of that train of thought in the past).

I know I’ve never felt healthier and I think that is what is important – not the size of clothes or weight. We’re all bombarded with media that tells us otherwise but doing this to stay fit and happy is a great goal! Lots of us runners are proof of that. :D

Even though I’m sidelined a bit and trying to get in some extra rest, I keep reminding myself that is part of the whole cycle. PT can be tough to stick with but after reading about many friend’s and/or other bloggers injuries I’m trying to be diligent!

        • Kate says:

Go Brie! It sounds like you’ve really thought your way through all of this. Much love, and looking forward to learning more about you journey!
